Introduction
Golden Gate Highlands National Park (SANParks) is inviting applications for five skilled Environmental Monitor positions under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). These fixed-term roles run until 31 March 2026 and offer hands-on conservation work, law-enforcement patrols, fire management, invasive species control and general ecological maintenance in a beautiful but physically demanding environment.

Remuneration: R 311.00 per day (EPWP rates)
These positions involve fieldwork across rugged and mountainous terrain. Candidates must be ready to work irregular hours (weekends, after-hours) and perform physically demanding tasks.
Who is eligible: core requirements
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 (Standard 10) qualification.
- Good physical fitness and ability to conduct extended patrols on foot in difficult terrain.
- Willingness to undergo a medical/fitness assessment and provide a valid police clearance (no criminal record).
- Flexibility to work weekends and after-hours when required.

- Competency with firearms (self-loading or manually operated rifles, 9mm pistols).

Responsibilities & key duties
- Law enforcement & patrols: wildlife monitoring, anti-poaching patrols, problem-animal control (on foot, by vehicle or horseback).
- Conservation infrastructure maintenance: fence and trail repairs, erosion control, road maintenance and habitat rehabilitation.
- Fire management: wildfire suppression, establishing firebreaks and conducting prescribed burns.
- Alien species control: clearing invasive plants and assisting ecological restoration tasks.
- Record keeping & reporting: incident logs, sightings, vehicle logbooks and reporting to section rangers or corporals.
- Additional duties: supporting stable/horse-riding activities and general conservation assistance as needed.
